Participants are supposed to have a basic knowledge of probability and statistics, typically taught at a first level course at university or equivalent. So it's not clear why it's unfortunate – the only unfortunate thing is that we still do not have a book better than Tennekes and Lumley “A first course in turbulence” – 1972 !!! In it, he grapples with the same question you and Didion both address, arriving at a somewhat practical (but no less true) solution. I agree that the graphics is awesome, but ….
